The laws defining crimes and procedures in New York are complicated…

Most Fridays, we will post a #fridayfacts…

Town/Village/City Courts (and District Courts on Long Island) handle traffic, small claims, evictions, and misdemeanors/violations within their locales. They cannot dispose of felonies.

County Courts handle felony-level offenses (57 counties, excluding NYC).

Family Court hears certain juvenile delinquency matters (under 18).

Youth Part addresses serious charges against 16–17-year-olds with special procedures.

Supreme Court (county-level in NY) has unlimited original jurisdiction and often hears serious criminal cases, especially where the judge has criminal experience.
