This week’s #fridayfacts explains statutes of limitations — the time limits on how long prosecutors have to bring charges.
Under CPL §30.10:
- Petty offenses: 1 year
- Misdemeanors: 2 years
- Most felonies: 5 years
- Class A felonies, murder, or rape 1st degree: no limit
Some crimes are tolled (paused) until discovery — for example, certain thefts or sexual crimes.
