DOT inspectors can stop and inspect these vehicles anytime, even without probable cause.
Violations include:
- In-service: minor, correctable issues (e.g. no fire extinguisher).
- Out-of-service: serious safety risks (e.g. faulty brakes).
Penalties:
- Out-of-service = up to $1,250 fine or 60 days jail (first offense).
- Knowing violations = up to $30,000 per offense.
