In Payton v. New York (1980), the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a NY law allowing police to enter homes for felony arrests without warrants.

The Court ruled the Fourth Amendment “draws a firm line at the entrance to the home.”

Absent a warrant or clear emergency, police cannot lawfully enter a residence. The home remains one of the most protected spaces under U.S. law.
