Since 2012, NY DMV regulations have imposed lifetime license revocation for dangerous repeat alcohol or drug offenders.
Defined as:
- 5+ lifetime DWIs, or
- 3–4 DWIs in 25 years plus a serious driving offense, such as:
- Fatal accident involvement
- Vehicular assault/manslaughter
- Multiple 5-point violations
- 20+ license points in 25 years
- Fatal accident involvement
These regulations apply retroactively and only after a license revocation, not a suspension.
If labeled a dangerous repeat offender, the driver loses their license for life.
